Pat Barker is no stranger to writing about the human cost of war. She won the Booker Prize in 1995 for her novel "Regeneration", the first book in a stunning trilogy about World War One. In her latest novel "The Silence of the Girls" she tackles the Western civilization's foundational text: The Iliad. This is no simple retelling of Homer's masterpiece about the Trojan War, but rather a supplement, a filling in, another story entirely. It is the story of Briseis, a young woman who was a queen in a city the great Greek hero Achilles sacks and destroys. Like Yazadi women under ISIS, she becomes a slave to the conquerors. In the Iliad Briseis is silent, despite being pivotal to the story: awarded to Achilles as a war prize, she is taken back by sulking King Agamemnon. Achilles withdraws for a sulk himself, refusing to fight for the Greeks and so jeopardizing the entire war effort.Briseis narrates her own life, illuminating and giving other women from the epic a voice. Forced to have sex with the same man who killed her husband and her brothers, she struggles with her fear and rage to find another meaning to her life and to hold on to the last vestiges of agency and identity. The writing is not as lyrical as other of Barker's novels but it is crisp and true, exploring the experience of too many women and girls in the past--and today. Briseis's struggle to live and to tell her own story demands courage--the battlefield is different, but the war is as real as anything the Greek and trojan fighters face. Barker joins modern writers like Margaret Atwood and Madeline Miller to look again at Homer's classic, this time telling the stories of women during war.
