Beverly Jenkins, First of her Name, Slayer of Words, Breaker of Romance Boundaries and Griot of African American History. Jenkins is one of the G.OA.T.s in romance full stop. She brings it everytime. RITA...she don't need no stinking RITA. Rebel is an exceptional novel full of history which is a staple of Ms. Bev's work. It takes place right after the Civil War in New Orleans and grapples with the societal and poltical challenges facing the country. The historical bits are so well executed and researched it made my head spin. Prior to this novel, I didn't know much about the Freedman Bureau or its purpose. Her novels should be used to teach African American history because I've learned more reading her books than I did in school.Valinda and Drake are relationship goals as the young folk say! In some romance novels, the heroine stands out more than the hero and vice versa. But Rebel is the rare novel where both protagonists leap off the page.Drake, a master architect, wielder and carpenter, is a worthy hero. As a member of the LeVeq family, I expected nothing less.Valinda, an educator from the North, is no weeping willow. She's committed to uplifting the race and her bravery is notable. Leaving the North to a battle torn South is more than a notion.Their chemistry is a heady combination of heat and sweet. Drake a consummate gentleman fights his urges because Valinda is engaged, but their slow burn romance turns into a blaze. I mean it's the pirate's blood, he can't help himself. ðŸ˜The conflict is multipronged and mostly external. Bev doesn't, over-egg-the- pudding with too much angst. Systemic racism, sexism, government corruption and/or indifference, poverty and homophobia are the pillars of an era brimming with promise and pain. Nonetheless, the race persisted and made the choice to live, love and thrive in despite of oppressive systems. Somehow Bev encapsulates these issues into a romance without it being a tragedy.âââââStars
Beverly Jenkins, has always been my go to when I needed a good book. This book was not even close to her talents. She left out Archer's marriage, in her famous book Winds of the Storm,and it was flat out boring. The book didn't gain any excitement until 90 percent through. Waste of time and money.
It's something about reading one of Ms Beverly's stories that you know you're going to get more than just a story but a history lesson. I for one admire the way history is effortlessly woven throughout Rebel. It's amazing the things not taught regarding reconstruction and the plight to freedom. Nevertheless, Drake and Valinda can we say relationship goals. In all seriousness the character development was one point. You saw the personalities unfold. You love the eagerness to learn from Valinda and her ability to ask and challenge. Drake is a man after each readers heart. He's loyal, a protector and provider with a great sense of adventure. Together Drake and Valinda made sense. What I loved even more is how the LeVeq family dynamics played a pivotal role in the story. Julianne is going to be one of my top five mom's in fiction .You'll laugh, you'll get frustrated (in a good way), you'll root for love. You'll even find yourself trying to slow your pace in reAding only for you to continue on, and finish in a single sitting.
In this story, Drake is mentioned to be lighter than Raimond but it’s well known that Drake’s skin was as dark as his mama’s, the lovely Julianna. The timeline was a bit off. In this book Drake & Val married and had a son. There's no mention of Val or the son in Winds of the Storm (Archer & Zahra), which took place 4 years AFTER this story. The thing that bothered me the most was the situation with the “Old Pirate†LeVeq ancestor. In this book, it says it was Dominic LeVeq but in the epilogue of Dominic’s story, Captured, Mrs Beverly stated: “To answer the oft posed question as to whether Dominic is the fabled “Old Pirate†mentioned in the other LeVeq books, Through the Storm and Winds of the Storm, he is not. That person is Esteban da Silva, Dominic’s friend and the pilot of the Marie.â€.... I was just disappointed because the story wasn’t as exciting and interesting as all of her other work and some facts didn’t add up to the previous books. Seemed rushed and not well thought out.
If this is your first Beverly Jenkins historical piece or even your first read about the House of LeVeq, the writing and historical references are great. If you've read all the other works including every LeVeq book, beginning with Raimond in Indigo, this is not what you expected. Most of the historical works are synchronised is such a way that timelines match up. And certainly, books that follow a certain family follows a timeline. Winds of the Storm I believe was the last LeVeq book. Or maybe Captured. However Caputired tells the beginnings of ALL the Laveq that we come to know right before and after the end of slavery. Archers and Zahra's story follow Raimond and Sable. Rebel is written for a timeframe between Raimond an Archer. Also unlike Sable and Zahra and so many other heroines that Mrs Jenkins has written about, Valinda was a bit lackluster. This feels like a book that was sitting somewhere and Mrs Jenkins finally decided to publish it because people wanted a new book. I don't even get how a book that takes place in the middle of other stories can be a new series. The Leveqs have their own series. Hopefully the next book is better thought out
